iPhone apps

When I initially got an iPhone I thought that the whole app function was the best thing since sliced bread.. then I took it abroad and realised that the iPhone is of next to no value without an internet connection. Without WiFi the iPhone takes you back to 1999 where the only thing you could do was use the calender, play snake and have a torch at hand.

Luckily for me, I'm not abroad and I DO have an internet connection so my iPhone is currently working great YAY!

I feel like making a list today so I thought I would share with you some apps that I like (I am hoping that somebody in the world will half care but I'm not holding my breath or anything..).

I should actually be writing up my university dissertation, due in 22 days, but I can't be asked right now.

So here goes:

1. Whatsapp

The app that you kind of have to have even if you don't want it. It's great for instantly sending photos and having group chats but not so great if you don't want to reply to someone but you've read their message so you know it's double-ticked and then they're online when you read it and they start typing and you go offline and then feel bad and you wish you still just used conventional SMS and - it's just one big mess.





2. MailOnline

Sometimes I just wish that I was intelligent enough to actually enjoy reading something like the Independent or the Financial Times. Instead I prefer to read a slightly right-wing paper that doesn't think grammar is overly-important and produces articles that are just a little bit too juicy and controversial to not be made up.

3. PicCal

This is a recent download and I'm really liking it so far. Basically it's like photo diary where you take a photo a day and it stores them as a calender. I hope that it's not going to end up like a real life diary where you're really excited about it at the start and you write in it twice a day and then you've forgotten about it a week later.

5. iPray

Great for prayer times. I had the lite version then I bought the full version, honestly I can't tell the difference. Something to do with the compass or athaans. 

6. TVCatchup

Best app for live TV on your phone. And it has Dave. I mean who doesn't love TopGear??

7. Alafasy Radio

So I really liked this app at the start. Mishary Alafasy is an excellent reciter. The only thing that's not great is when you use the app you're greeted with his giant face:

Now this was not a problem until my mum saw it on my phone and somehow convinced herself that I chose the background and so I must have a crush on him.

I don't think that I've listened to  this app  since my mother's rather traumatising accusation. Not that it made much of a difference to her anyway.. she still started smirking at me when he was on TV the other day in a "I know that you know that I know" sort of a way O.O 

Yeh, not my favourite app actually.

Request: Graduation Look

Minha Aliya requested that I suggest a graduation outfit for her upcoming (middle school?) graduation. I think that she said she is 14 years old and the only girl who wears hijab in her year.

As you mentioned that the other girls generally wear pencil skirts, I would suggest that you follow a similar theme. Here is an outfit for some inspiration, hope you like it! I have tried to keep it young and fun but I might not be the best person to ask as I did not wear hijab until quite a few years after secondary school so do not have experience dressing in hijab for prom/graduation.

Smart Hijab Tip #1: Colour

I have decided that this blog is in need of a section dedicated to smart/work hijab outfit ideas and tips.

After spending about a month in a hospital and coming across a lot of professional hijabis, I realised that a fair few of them (I feel like a bitch writing this..) could do with *slightly* improving their work look.

Obviously I'm not claiming to know everything about smart dressing, we all know that only a Turk could ever reasonably claim such a thing (just look at Hijab Revival and Hijabi and the City if you don't believe me - EDIT - In case any of you don't understand English, I am implying in this sentence that those two ladies have amazing smart dress senses, like many Turks that I have seen).

So anyway, one thing I noticed that a lot of hijabis do is use far too many colours in their outfit to ever be able to make it look smart and professional. I personally think that the key is to keep it simple and use different shades of a colour as opposed to putting lots of colours together. I would say stick to a maximum of 3 colours.

If you are stuck for something to wear to work then I would recommend pairing a top with a scarf of the same colour but either much darker or much lighter than the top. Here's an idea:

Organizing your makeup collection

As my makeup, hair accessory, and beauty product collections grow I am finding it harder to quickly find what I need when I am getting ready for the day and I am running out of room to stash baskets and makeup bags, so today I will be discussing organization of makeup products. I also will be using the techniques and ideas to clean out my collections later. I have scoured the Internet to find numerous ideas of what to use to organize your items and how to do it. I will start off with ideas for storing makeup, then off to lotions, body washes, hair care etc. then onto hair accessories.



1. Storing and Organizing your Makeup Collection

Before you begin organizing your makeup collection you need to go through your stash and throw out the unused/expired items. If you haven't used something in the past 6 months I would suggest to throw it out. One thing a lot of women do not realize is that makeup does have an expiration date, just because it isn't clearly stamped on the package does not mean it doesn't exist. Below I have listed the general shelf life of products, to make it easier to remember how long you have had a product I recommend taking a small round circle and writing the month and year on it and stick it somewhere on the package that way you know when it is time to discard it.

Shelf Life of Makeup

Concealer: can last up to 12 months
Powder: 2 years
Foundation: Water based will last up to 12 months, oil based will last up to 18 months.
Cream & Gel Cleansers: 1 year
Pencil Eye Liner: Will last up to 3 years, should be sharpened regularly
Eye Shadows: 3 years
Mascara: Expires the fastest, only lasts about 4 months
Lip Liner: 3 years
Lipstick: 1-2 years, it will begin to smell when it is ready to be thrown out
Nail Polish: Up to 12 months, depending on the quality of the polish.


The next step to organizing your makeup is to separate into groups (eye shadows, lipsticks, brushes, etc.), that way when you are looking for something specific it will be easier to find. There are many different options for storing your products, select what is right for you depending on how much makeup you own, where you are going to be storing it, and how often you use your makeup, budget will also come into play sometimes. You could go with a simple cosmetic bag, I myself own too much makeup and do not like digging through a bag to find what I need. I do keep a cosmetic bag stashed away to use when traveling but after today I will be using something else to store all of my makeup.

Another option is using an organizer with drawers, the 5 drawer option is what I will be using. With this option you could separate each type of product and know exactly where they are, bigger items such as palettes I will be stacking next to it in my storage closet.

You could also use a silverware tray. With a silverware tray you can easily separate out your items and your makeup would be out in the open to easily grab. I think it would be perfect for a smaller collection I wouldn't recommend it for someone who has a massive collection.


There are many other types of boxes you could use, you can find stackable ones, little baskets, and other types of simple organizers, it really depends on what kind of collection you have.

Torrid Review

I'm back, I haven't posted lately because things have been hectic in the real world, a house full of sick people, Aaron had two shows, and I have been working more hours than normal, but now for a little bit things are back to the norm.

In the last update I posted that there would be many reviews in the works, today I will be reviewing Torrid and in the next couple weeks there will be reviews on E.L.F Cosmetics, I have two new items from www.pinupgirlclothing.com and I have a couple other beauty products I would love to discuss.

Torrid is a curvy woman's heaven. You can visit www.torrid.com and shop online or find a store near you. They carry sizes 10 and up and it's fashionable, wearable clothing. Personally, I think that Torrid is not for someone who is on a tight budget, they have very high quality and beautiful pieces but they are pricey at times.  A torrid store just opened in my local mall so I was quick to take a little shopping trip to explore it, before this store I had only browsed online and never have purchased.

When I first walked in the store the very first thing that caught my eyes were the women who worked there, like me they had curves to kill and they had an amazing fashion sense. They both greeted me and asked if I needed help and checked on me numerous times as I wandered through the store wide eyed. I think I circled the store five times just eyeing items and thinking how I could work the items into my already existing wardrobe. I finally picked out a red satin belted pencil skirt, a black tank top, and a sheer black lace top. I wanted so much more, but as I said before they can be pricey. I wanted one of each dress they had but I often don't have anywhere to wear a dress. I am very pleased with my items, they have a wonderful fit, they are very flattering and I can easily work them into my existing wardrobe.

My number one love about the store was the workers and the ambiance, that is what convinced me to make my purchases and not feel guilty about the price of the items. The workers focused so much on helping me, and the stores decor just made you happy to be there.
