Hijabifying a look for less

I really like the look below so I decided to re-create it to make it slightly more hijab (and day) appropriate.

Fashion Trends for Summer 2013: Statement Stripes

Hello Lovelies!
In most areas Memorial Weekend is like an unofficial kick off of summer, and as the weekend comes to a conclusion I find myself wanting to discuss the upcoming trends for this summer. So, starting with this post about the trend of statement stripes I will be creating a collection of posts showcasing this summer's trends, and my thoughts on them. To add a little more fun to this post I will be creating a look showcasing how to wear the trend, and I also will feature examples of how not to wear the trend using Polyvore.

Although I happen to love striped pieces I think it is very easy to find pieces that do not flatter the body such as the pieces in the picture below.  I believe that pleats and stripes, especially bold stripes, should not be paired together, it is very reminiscent of a cheerleader's uniform. I also believe you should always try on pieces with stripes before purchasing because every striped piece is not create equally, and some pieces can be very unflattering to many body types. I myself have to be careful choosing striped pieces because I have a larger chest and hips which tends to distort the stripes and appear unflattering.

On the runway designers have been pairing different striped pieces together to create on ensemble, but I personally think it's overkill and unflattering. I believe there are two great ways you can work stripes into an outfit, either choose one bold striped piece and pair it with toned down accessories in the same color scheme like the outfit above, or choose striped accessories and pair them with an outfit consisting of pieces from the same color scheme like below.

Chanel

I have wanted a Chanel flap bag for the longest time. I probably need to come to terms with the fact that I'm never going to have one and just stop including them in my outfits :'(

Blazer Styling

I went on a little shopping trip with my mum today and bought a nice black blazer from H&M. Blazers are super versatile and can be styled in lots of ways - I like to keep the dress underneath plain and shapeless as I think the blazer provides enough structure and style on it's own.

Unfortunately the Chanel bag in the outfit is wishful thinking :"(

Smart Hijab Tip #2: Wedges

Source

My second smart hijab tip is about what has recently become my favourite type of shoe - the wedge. Wedges are great for both short and tall and I think that they instantly smarten and streamline any look.

As a general rule, I wouldn't wear open-toed or strappy wedges to work, it just doesn't look right. Also, make sure that the trousers almost (but don't quite) hit the ground.

Here's an outfit for some inspiration:

Wedges

Just be careful when you walk though.. I was getting the tube the other week and do you know when you think that the last step is actually the floor and your ankle twists in? Yeh that happened to me with a pair of wedges on.. I couldn't walk for a week :(

Request: Graduation Look

Minha Aliya requested that I suggest a graduation outfit for her upcoming (middle school?) graduation. I think that she said she is 14 years old and the only girl who wears hijab in her year.

As you mentioned that the other girls generally wear pencil skirts, I would suggest that you follow a similar theme. Here is an outfit for some inspiration, hope you like it! I have tried to keep it young and fun but I might not be the best person to ask as I did not wear hijab until quite a few years after secondary school so do not have experience dressing in hijab for prom/graduation.

I hope that this helps! I would have liked to suggest other looks for you but I am so behind on work at the moment, I really don't have the time. Let me know how it goes!

Statement Scarf*

I have always thought that the "rule" of having to have a "statement" piece in your outfit to make it work is generally not true. Outfits can look good with no statement pieces in them at all. Anyway, that's besides the point because the following look does contain a statement item - the scarf. Wearing a statement scarf is something I have not been keen on doing recently but if you dress it with simple clothes it can look really nice and not too try-hard.

*A "statement scarf" is not necessarily a scarf that's sparkly/shiny/glittery/tassely/mirrored.. that's just a social-suicide scarf.

Pink & Gold

An unmistakably beautiful combination. I absolutely love the look in this photo so I obviously had to copy it instead of doing microbiology (bleuurrghh..) :P

Here's a smart outfit idea for you. It can also easily be worn causally with jeans or with the right change of accessories.

Chiffon Dress

An autumn/winter outfit idea from yours truly :) I really like the dress but would give the belt a miss to keep it loose.

Every item is under $50.
